Witten
With a population of about 95,000, Witten is the largest city in the Ennepe-Ruhr district, located on the southeastern edge of the Ruhrgebiet. The forested hills of the Ardey Mountains, along with the Ruhr River—with its gentle floodplain landscape and the dammed Kemnader See—shape the landscape of this city rich in contrasts.

The extremely large green belt surrounding the city makes you feel the proximity to the Bergisches Land and the Sauerland. Forests, farmland, green spaces, and bodies of water make up two-thirds of the city’s total area. In Witten, the RuhrtalRadweg runs almost entirely along the Ruhr River with virtually no inclines. Particularly worth seeing are the Hohenstein recreational area, the leisure center at Kemnader See, and the Muttental valley. The Kemnader Reservoir, with its Ruhr inline skating track, is considered a paradise for inline skaters. Since 2013, there has been an approximately 11-kilometer-long loop here that is illuminated in the evenings.
More than 30 examples of mining heritage and meticulously reconstructed industrial monuments line a 9-kilometer-long mining history trail. The LWL Industrial Museum at the Nachtigall Coal Mine provides insights into 300 years of mining history in the Ruhrtal. In the Nachtigall Tunnel, you can experience the world “underground” and discover the last remaining coal seam. The museum is located directly on the RuhrtalRadweg and near the stops for the Ruhrtalbahn and the MS Schwalbe.
