As the youngest of six Ruhr reservoirs, Kemnader See was completed by the Ruhrverband in 1979 after three years of construction and officially opened to the public with a public festival in September 1980. With its hiking and cycling trails and the asphalted Ruhr-Inline skate route, it is one of Bochum's most popular leisure and excursion destinations and is an ideal meeting place for sailors and surfers. Whether stand-up paddling, inline skating, kitebuggy riding or simply relaxing on the beach - Kemnader See combines action and relaxation in one place. The WestUfer windsurfing and stand-up paddle school and the World Of Wind kitebuggy and beach sailing school offer children and adults numerous courses and training sessions on the water.
The covered beach sports and event location blue:beach offers a beach feeling and space to party, eat and let off steam whatever the weather. Less sporty visitors can take a tour on the MS Kemnade passenger ship or enjoy a cool drink or two on the StrandDeck Kemnade.
