The undisputed favorite destination is the “Neue Mitte,” home to Europe’s largest shopping and entertainment complex, the Centro, and the Gasometer. It attracts around 23 million visitors from Germany and abroad to the Ruhr Metropolis each year. The Centro features a shopping mall, a promenade with over 20 international restaurants, and a multiplex movie theater. In the immediate vicinity are also Germany’s largest Sea Life Aquarium, the Legoland Discovery Center, and a marina, the Marina Oberhausen. As in other cities in the Ruhrgebiet, the industrial heritage of days gone by is, of course, virtually omnipresent. Oberhausen’s landmark, for example, is the 117-meter-high Gasometer, visible from afar, which serves not only as a viewing tower but also as an extraordinary exhibition hall. With the castle and the locations of the LVR Industrial Museum, the city offers even more leisure attractions worth experiencing.
