Lake Harkort was dammed in the early 1930s as a river sewage treatment plant and is named after the entrepreneur Friedrich Harkort. It is bordered on the Herdecke side by the
Ruhr viaduct and on the Wetter side by the connecting bridge between Hagen and Wetter.
Well-developed footpaths and cycle paths offer opportunities for extensive walks and tours along the lake. The RuhrtalRadweg runs directly along the shore of Lake Harkort between Herdecke and Wetter. But visitors also get their money's worth on the water. You can experience the lake and the surrounding area from a different perspective on a round trip on the MS Friedrich Harkort passenger boat. Lake Harkort is also ideal for sailing, rowing and canoeing.
The imposing
viaduct is one of the Ruhrtal's most striking landmarks. Striking and majestic, the 313-metre-long sandstone construction spans the Harkortsee lake between Herdecke and Hagen at a lofty height of almost 30 meters.
