Herdecke is both a destination and a starting point for cycling, hiking, and canoeing trips. The beautiful landscape in and around Herdecke is ideal for cyclists, not least because of the lakes and the Ruhr River. Herdecke is also well-equipped for multi-day trips, with bike-friendly accommodations. For hiking, Herdecke also offers many options, including the Way of St. James, the WestfalenWanderWeg, and the Industrial Heritage Trail. A canoe trip is a great way to explore Herdecke from the water.

A visit to the city center and the historic Altstadt, with its unmistakable charm, is definitely worthwhile. A signage system that guides visitors from the banks of the Ruhr to the adjacent Altstadt in just a few meters points the way through the picturesque Bachviertel neighborhood and around the 1,000-year-old Stiftshügel hill. Numbered information signs on historic buildings make it easy to learn about the local history.
