RuhrtalRadweg - The classic

From the Sauerland to the Rhine

Logo Velociped

One of the most varied and versatile rivers in Germany invites you to discover an entire region with its riverside paths. No other river combines culture and nature in such a small space. Along its 230 kilometers from its source near Winterberg to its mouth in the Rhine near Duisburg, the Ruhr connects the pristine landscape of the Sauerland with the exciting and eventful Ruhr metropolis. In the Sauerland, the route is mostly downhill through the expanse of mountains and forests, before the valley in the Ruhrgebiet is framed by industrial monuments, castles and half-timbered villages. Here, the river is dammed several times to form large lakes, which serve as attractive leisure and recreation areas and are lined with beautiful cycle paths.

Day 1: Arrival in Winterberg
Look forward to Winterberg, the well-known vacation resort in Hochsauerland near the source of the Ruhr, because Winterberg is not only beautiful in winter! If you have a little time, don't miss a trip to the viewing tower and the fascinating Hochheide on the Kahler Asten.

Day 2: Meschede (41 km)
You start your varied journey at the source of the Ruhr. You cycle to the rose village of Assinghausen and the Kneipp spa Olsberg before reaching Meschede with the "Sauerland Cathedral".

Day 3: Neheim (43 km)
You quickly reach the parks of the Wasserschloß Laer. Marvel at the historic Altstadt of Arnsberg before cycling along the Ruhr to Neheim.

4 Day: Herdecke (52 km)
The surrounding hills slowly become gentler. You cycle via Wickede and Fröndenberg to the old Hanseatic town of Schwerte. The viewpoint of the Hohensyburg ruins greets you from afar. You cycle directly along the shores of Hengsteysee to the small town of Herdecke.

Day 5: Hattingen (38 km)
You cycle along the Harkortsee to Muttertag (cradle of Ruhr mining). Visit the "Nachtigall Colliery"! At the Burgruine Hardenstein you take the ferry across the Ruhr and reach the Kemnader reservoir. Look forward to the Altstadt of Hattingen.

Day 6: Kettwig (37 km)
Visit the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum before heading to Baldeneysee. Here it is worth visiting the Villa Lohne before you reach the half-timbered old town of Kettwig.

Day 7: Duisburg (32 km)
Cycle past Schloss Broich to the award-winning Aquarius water tower before reaching Duisburg.

Day 8: Departure from Duisburg
