From the Sauerland to the Rhine

One of Germany’s most diverse and multifaceted rivers invites you to explore an entire region along its riverside paths. No other river combines culture and nature so closely within such a small area. Over its 230 kilometers from its source near Winterberg to its confluence with the Rhine near Duisburg, the Ruhr connects the unspoiled landscape of the Sauerland with the exciting and vibrant Ruhr Metropolis. In the Sauerland, the route is mostly downhill through the vast expanse of mountains and forests, before the valley in the Ruhrgebiet is framed by industrial landmarks, castles, and half-timbered villages.  Here, the river is dammed several times to form large lakes, which serve as attractive leisure and recreation areas and are lined with beautiful bike paths.

Day 1:Winterberg – Arrival
Look forward to Winterberg, the well-known resort town in the Hochsauerland region near the source of the Ruhr—because Winterberg isn’t just beautiful in winter! If you have a little time, don’t miss a trip to the observation tower and the fascinating Hochheide on the Kahler Asten. 

Day 2: Meschede (41 km)
Your varied journey begins at the source of the Ruhr. You’ll cycle to the “rose village” of Assinghausen and the Kneipp spa town of Olsberg before reaching Meschede and its “Sauerland Cathedral.” 

Day 3: Neheim (43 km)
You’ll quickly reach the grounds of Laer Wasserschloß. Marvel at the historic Altstadt of Arnsberg before cycling along the Ruhr to Neheim. 

Day 4: Herdecke (52 km)
The surrounding hills gradually become gentler. Passing through Wickede and Fröndenberg, you’ll cycle to the old Hanseatic city of Schwerte. Even from a distance, the viewpoint at the Hohensyburg ruins beckons. You’ll cycle right along the shore of Lake Hengsteysee to the small town of Herdecke.

Day 5: Hattingen (38 km)
You’ll cycle along Lake Harkort to Muttertag (the cradle of Ruhr mining). Visit the “Zeche Nachtigall” coal mine! At the Burgruine Hardenstein, take the ferry across the Ruhr River to reach the Kemnader Reservoir. Look forward to exploring Hattingen’s Altstadt.

Day 6: Kettwig (37 km)
Visit the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum before heading to Baldeneysee. Here, it’s worth visiting Villa Hügel before you reach the half-timbered old town of Kettwig.

Day 7: Duisburg (32 km)
Passing Schloss Broich, you’ll cycle to the award-winning Aquarius Water Tower before reaching Duisburg.

Day 8: Departure from Duisburg
