After the Second World War, the villa was no longer used as a residential building. However, in the 1950s and 1960s it retained its significance as a place of identification and representation for the Fried. Krupp and is now owned by the non-profit Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation.

Villa Hügel, a symbol of Germany's industrialization, is now open to the public. Numerous representative rooms in the "Great House" are open to the public. The most important parts of the originally rich furnishings are rare historical tapestries, portraits of members of the Krupp family and the German emperors as well as seating groups, cupboards and chests from various periods.

The "Small House", the western outbuilding of the villa, houses the "Krupp Historical Exhibition", which was redesigned in 2007. On two floors, visitors can explore several topics: the history of the Krupp family and Villa Hügel with its park, the development of the Krupp company since its beginnings around 200 years ago and the establishment and activities of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation.

the Krupp Historical Archive is also located in the Small House. Founded in 1905, the archive preserves and indexes the sources on Krupp history since the 18th century.

Art exhibitions at Villa Hügel
Since 1953, the "Big House" of Villa Hügel has been used for sophisticated art and cultural history exhibitions. Berthold Beitz, Alfried Krupp's chief representative and chairman of the board of trustees of the Krupp Foundation from 1953 until his death in 1967, established the Ruhr Cultural Foundation from his private assets in 1984, which has been responsible for the exhibitions ever since.
