The Basilica of St. Ludgerus in Essen-Werden is one of the most significant late Romanesque church buildings in the Rhineland. Originally built in the 9th century as the monastery church of Werden Abbey, it was redesigned in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. A particular highlight is the crypt, which houses the shrine of St. Liudger, the first bishop of Münster and founder of the abbey. The St. Ludgerus Treasury preserves valuable relics from the former Benedictine Abbey of Werden, which was founded around 800. Of particular note are the early medieval treasures, complemented by works of gold and silversmithing, ivory carvings, sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, and vestments. This collection offers a fascinating insight into the art and culture of bygone eras and makes the basilica a worthwhile destination for history and art enthusiasts.
