The Ruhr River originates at the Ruhrkopf, a 696-meter-high mountain located within the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park. A commemorative stone and a roundabout are located at the source, offering a place for reflection and a brief rest. From its source in Winterberg to its mouth in Duisburg, the Ruhr stretches over a length of 219 kilometers. Major routes such as the RuhrtalRadweg and the Rothaarsteig pass near the source of the Ruhr. The surrounding region features a characteristic low-mountain landscape with forests and meadows. This setting invites visitors to explore at length and take in the unspoiled natural surroundings. The Ruhrquellenhütte is just a few minutes’ walk from the source. There, visitors can stop for refreshments, go skiing, or try out mountain carts.
