Striking and majestic, the 313-metre-long sandstone construction spans the
Harkortsee lake between Herdecke and Hagen at a lofty height of almost 30 meters. A total of 24,000 cubic meters of masonry were used in the imposing construction. The quarry stone material used came mainly from nearby sandstone quarries in Herdecke. In 1879, the first passengers rode over the masterpiece of structural engineering with its 12 semi-circular arches, each with a span of 20 meters.
The landscape around the Ruhr Viaduct is also worth a visit and is ideal for hiking and cycling. The bridge marks the beginning of
Lake Harkort and is therefore in the immediate vicinity of the RuhrtalRadweg.
