The Ruhr Viaduct, a 313-metre-long sandstone structure, spans the Harkortsee lake between Herdecke and Hagen at a height of almost 30 meters. This structure was built using around 24,000 cubic meters of quarry stone, which was primarily extracted from the surrounding sandstone quarries in Herdecke. This engineering masterpiece, which features twelve semi-circular arches, each with a span of 20 meters, was commissioned in 1879.
