Niedersfeld, a district of Winterberg in the Hochsauerland district, is characterized by a distinctive natural landscape of which the Hochheide is an integral part. These high-altitude areas consist of expansive heath and moorlands with unique flora and fauna.

Located at an elevation of 800 meters, the area stretches along the northern slope of the Clemensberg near the Hessian border and has been a nature reserve since 1955. The Hochheide offers sweeping views and is ideal for nature-based exploration. The rare plant species found here are adapted to the specific conditions of the high moors. The landscape’s appearance changes with the seasons, with the flora displaying a variety of colors in spring and summer.

Heidschnucken sheep are used to maintain the heathland, serving as natural lawnmowers. Bird species such as the cuckoo, capercaillie, and nightjar use this area for nesting. The Neuer Hagen Nature Reserve is also home to Arctic and alpine plant species that are of interest for research purposes.
