Duisburg's Lehmbruck Museum is characterized by a unique collection of modern sculpture. The focus is on key works by Wilhelm Lehmbruck.
It is the successor institution to the Kunstmuseum Duisburg, which was founded at a different location in 1924. During the Nazi regime, the art museum lost around 100 works, including pieces from Lehmbruck's most important creative phase (1910-1918). The current museum building was designed by Lehmbruck's son Manfred in 1958. The museum opened in 1964 with the Lehmbruck wing and the glass hall. An extension was added in 1987. In 2009, the Lehmbruck Museum was able to acquire the sculptor's extensive estate: 33 sculptures, 18 paintings, 11 pastels, 819 drawings and 260 prints.

At the Lehmbruck Museum, you regularly have the opportunity to encounter figurative art by Constantin Brâncuşi, Pablo Picasso or Alberto Giacometti, for example, as well as abstract works from Europe and the USA by Ulrich Rückriem or Richard Artschwager. If you are interested in the expanded concept of sculpture, the Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg is also the right place for you: The museum dedicates changing exhibitions to the question of what sculpture can be today.
The Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg is surrounded by the approximately seven-hectare Immanuel Kant Park: The museum building and the adjoining sculpture courtyard, which merges into the public park, are located in the middle of Duisburg's city center. In the courtyard and park, you can experience great sculptures for free and outdoors: More than 40 large sculptures by important sculptors from all over the world - from Henry Moore and Meret Oppenheim to Richard Serra - are on permanent display there under the motto "Art is for everyone".
