The Kreinberg housing development in Schwerte-Ost offers a clear example of early modern housing construction from the industrial age. It was built in the immediate vicinity of the Reichsbahn repair shop for steam locomotives, the planning for which began in 1913 and for which Schwerte was awarded the contract in 1914. Starting in 1920, the workers’ housing estate was built according to plans by Reichsbahn Senior Councilor Behnes; the first apartment was ready for occupancy in August 1921, even before the plant officially opened on October 1, 1922.
By 1935, the complex had grown to nearly 800 apartments. Its urban design follows the garden city concept: closed rows of houses, U-shaped blocks with bay windows, townhouses, hedge-lined paths, and plaza-like street spaces characterize the neighborhood. The commercial center, with shops selling everyday necessities, was located along Lichtendorfer Straße. Since 2001, the housing estate—which was largely preserved during World War II—has been fully designated as a historic landmark.
