IUZ Bochum Observatory

The IUZ Bochum Observatory offers a wide range of educational programs across various event formats. These cover topics such as natural sciences, technology, and sustainability, as well as astronomical observations. A particular focus is placed on extracurricular civic education in the area of sustainability. At the heart of the observatory is the radome, which houses the radio telescope—still actively used in space exploration projects—and features an exhibition area. During the winter months, when the weather is clear, the astronomical observation station allows visitors to explore the starry sky through optical telescopes, accompanied by expert commentary. The observatory also offers an introduction to astronomy. The mobile satellite and laboratory van expands educational opportunities throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly in regions without local programs. Bochum’s historical significance in astronomy is remarkable: in 1957, the first signals from Sputnik I were received here, and in 1969, the radome supported the Apollo 11 moon landing.
