750 years ago, the Isenburg ruins were one of the most important fortifications in the region and played a central role in the rule of the Essen area. Over the centuries, the complex fell into disrepair and became overgrown by nature. Around 70 years ago, extensive excavations began to make the ruins accessible again. The entire castle complex is now a listed building and heritage site and belongs to the city of Essen. In 2002, a historical adventure trail was opened, offering comprehensive insights into the history and life at the castle on six information boards. This project was financed by the Foundation for the Beautification of the City of Essen.
