The Bochum Railroad Museum, a major museum, is located in a former railroad depot on the banks of the Ruhr River, near the RuhrtalRadweg. It highlights over 100 years of railroad history as well as the importance of water and coal for the regional development of rail transportation.
Historic facilities such as the roundhouse and turntable demonstrate how steam locomotives were maintained. The exhibition showcases technologies and innovations, including the cab of a steam locomotive, historic passenger cars, and the development of battery-powered vehicles.
A historic railcar, known as the “Schweineschnäuzchen,” runs between the Bochum-Dahlhausen S-Bahn station and the museum. A light railway offers rides across the grounds, illustrating the diversity of rail as a mode of transportation.
A ride on the historic museum train is a special experience. Hauled by historic locomotives, it features restored railcars. The Ruhrtal routes showcase romantic castles and industrial culture with their distinctive structures.

Separate admission fees apply on museum days and for special events.
Every Saturday and Sunday, free short tours covering the function and history of the site are offered at 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
Additional tours can be booked upon request.
