Ruhrgebiet Bike Tour: Nature, Pleasure, and Industrial Heritage

Cycle through the Ruhrgebiet as everyone knows it—and into the Ruhrgebiet as no one knows it. Former railroad tracks become bike paths; old industrial sites become monuments. Discover the idyllic Ruhr River, which gave this region its name, and ride along the old towpath. On this bike tour, you’ll experience the contrast between industry and nature.

Day 1: From the Ruhr River to the Zollern Coal Mine in Dortmund (approx. 35 km)
On the day of arrival, you’ll cycle a loop through the cities of Witten and Dortmund. From Witten, the tour takes you past the historic Haus Hohenstein and the mining memorial to the former “Rheinischer Esel” railroad right-of-way. After about 22 km, you’ll reach the Zollern Coal Mine in Dortmund. It’s considered one of the most beautiful and extraordinary reminders of Germany’s industrial past. The route takes you back to the hotel via Haus Dellwig and the “Rheinischer Esel.”

Day 2: Mining and Steel along the RuhrtalRadweg (approx. 41 km)
Starting right from the hotel, you’ll begin with a highlight of industrial heritage: At the Nachtigall Coal Mine, we’ll take you back to the time when “black gold” was mined by driving horizontal tunnels into the slopes and, later, digging the first shafts deep into the earth. The blast furnace at the Hattingen Henrichshütte is now the oldest surviving blast furnace in the region. Afterward, discover the quaint half-timbered houses of Hattingen’s Altstadt. You’ll make your way back to the hotel along the historic towpath.

Day 3: Enjoying the Green Ruhrgebiet: Wetter – Harkortsee – Herdecke (approx. 30 km)
On your last day, set out from the hotel on a tour through the green Ruhrgebiet. One stop is the 13th-century Wasserschloß in Werdingen. It’s worth taking a break at the castle café here. At the junction between Lake Harkort and Hengsteysee near Herdecke, you’ll cross to the other side of the Ruhr and cycle back to the hotel along well-maintained bike paths along Lake Harkort.
