There are two day trips. On Day 1, the 50.6-km route takes you from the Sheraton Essen Hotel first to the Ruhr River and Baldeneysee, then on to the historic districts of Werden and Kettwig with their charming half-timbered houses. Afterward, you’ll cycle through the Ruhr floodplains to Mülheim an der Ruhr, where—behind the main train station—you can experience the future of cycling mobility on a section of the RS1. You’ll then head away from the Ruhr River onto the Grugatrasse. Here, it’s worth making a stop in the garden city of Margarethenhöhe and taking a detour to the former Gruga garden exhibition grounds before cycling back to the hotel.
On the second day, you’ll set out on a 55.9 km tour to discover the Ruhrgebiet’s mining history! The absolute highlight is the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring the Monument Trail and the Ruhr Museum. From there, the route continues along the Nordsternweg, a well-maintained bike path built on a former railroad right-of-way, to Gelsenkirchen, where the impressive Nordstern Coal Mine awaits. Take a detour to the Tetraeder—the climb is a bit strenuous, but it rewards you with an extraordinary photo opportunity and a unique view of the site of the Prosper Haniel coal mine and coking plant, which was closed in 2018 as Germany’s last hard coal mine. Via Oberhausen, you’ll head south through the beautiful Hexbach Valley and then take the Rheinische Bahn route back to the center of Essen.
