From the Sauerland to the Rhine

Over the 230 kilometers from its source near Winterberg to its confluence with the Rhine near Duisburg, the Ruhr connects the unspoiled landscape of the Sauerland with the exciting and vibrant Ruhr metropolis. In the Sauerland, the route is mostly downhill through vast mountains and forests, before the valley in the Ruhrgebiet is framed by industrial landmarks, castles, and half-timbered villages.  Here, the river is dammed several times to form large lakes, which serve as attractive leisure and recreation areas and are lined with beautiful bike paths. One of Germany’s most diverse and versatile rivers invites you to discover an entire region along its riverside paths. No other river combines culture and nature so closely within such a small area.

Day 1: Winterberg – Arrival
Look forward to Winterberg, the well-known resort town near the source of the Ruhr. 

Day 2: Meschede (41 km)
You’ll begin your varied journey at the source of the Ruhr. You’ll cycle to the “rose village” of Assinghausen and the Kneipp spa town of Olsberg before reaching Meschede and its “Sauerland Cathedral.”

Day 3: Neheim (43 km)
You’ll quickly reach the grounds of Laer Wasserschloß. Marvel at the historic Altstadt of Arnsberg before cycling along the Ruhr to Neheim.

Day 4: Herdecke (52 km)
The surrounding hills gradually become gentler. Passing through Wickede and Fröndenberg, you’ll cycle to the old Hanseatic city of Schwerte. Even from a distance, the viewpoint at the Hohensyburg ruins beckons. You’ll enjoy an idyllic ride along the shore of Hengsteysee to the small town of Herdecke.

Day 5: Burgaltendorf (44 km)
In the morning, the bike path leads to the “Cradle of Ruhr Mining.” You’ll cycle along Lake Harkort, past the must-see “Zeche Nachtigall” Industrial Museum and the Kemnader Reservoir, to Hattingen. Look forward to your hotel in Burgaltendorf!

Day 6: Duisburg (59 km)
You’ll follow the bike path to Baldeneysee, where you can visit Villa Hügel. Cycle along the Ruhr from Kettwig, through Mülheim—home to the award-winning Aquarius Water Tower—to the Ruhr’s confluence with the Rhine. Round out the evening in Duisburg’s Inner Harbor at one of the many restaurants, pubs, or bars.

Day 7: Departure from Duisburg

Conclusion: This impressive tour along the Ruhrtal Bike Trail will leave you with wonderful memories for a long time to come!
