The RuhrtalRadweg Meets the Industrial Heritage Route

Logo Tour de Ruhr

More than 30 highlights line the route between Dortmund and Duisburg, Bochum and Herdecke: viewpoints overlooking the panoramic industrial landscapes, historic workers’ housing estates, the Zollverein World Heritage Site, and decommissioned steel mills. A wide variety of museums, restaurants, and Biergärten round out this spectacular tour.

Day 1: Arrivalin Herdecke
Your vacation begins in Herdecke: a round of mini-golf, followed by an evening stroll through the historic Bachviertel district with its many half-timbered houses.

Day 2: Herdecke – Essen (65 km)
Lake Harkordt, Baldeneysee, and the towpath. In between: the historic Nachtigall coal mine, the Henrichshütte industrial monument, Hattingen’s Altstadt, the Bochum Railway Museum, and the Krupp Villa Hügel.

Day 3: Essen – Duisburg  (40 km)
From the mouth of the Ruhr to the Rhine. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Rhine river traffic and, in the Port of Duisburg among old warehouses and mill buildings, savor a Ruhr-region beer with a hearty currywurst. Schimmi sends his regards!

Day 4: Duisburg – Oberhausen (28 km)
Explore the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park by bike and follow the “Path of Iron.” In Oberhausen, the massive gasometer awaits your visit.

Day 5: Oberhausen – Bochum (41 km)
The magnificent, undulating spiral bridge “Slinky Springs to Fame” crosses the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Tetraeder landmark and then on to the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 6: Bochum – Castrop-Rauxel (50 km)
Following the Erzbahn railway line, the bike path winds past Holger’s Erzbahnbude (a cult classic!) to the historic Henrichenburg ship lift.

Day 7: Castrop-Rauxel – Herdecke (42 km)
A stop at the Zollern Coal Mine industrial monument is definitely worth it. Don’t miss Phoenix Lake and a guided tour along the skywalk of the former steelworks there.
