Industrial Heritage Route

Cycle along former railroad tracks and beautiful canal-side paths, on the newly constructed Emscher Bike Path and the scenic Ruhrtal Bike Path, straight to the industrial heritage highlights of the Ruhrgebiet. The loop tour takes you to former steel mills, coal mines, and coking plants, spectacularly designed Halden, and magnificent industrialists’ mansions, combining the themes of industrial heritage, nature, and recreational fun in a truly unique way. During the daily tours, you’ll venture underground and up to lofty heights, cycle through the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, and walk through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Complex; you’ll stand next to the blast furnace and take a leisurely boat ride through the Port of Duisburg. You’ll get to know the many sights in a varied way, experience a very special journey to fascinating, truly extraordinary places in the “Radrevier-Ruhr,” and at the same time be amazed at how fresh and green the Ruhrgebiet looks today.   

This customized cycling tour is one-of-a-kind, as it includes five exciting, varied, and informative guided tours on the diverse topic of industrial culture—most of which are exclusive to our guests. (The tour can also be booked without the guided tours.)

Day 1: Arrivalin Herne
Individual arrivalin Herne. In the afternoon, you’ll get in the mood for the tour.

Day 2: Herne – Dortmund (approx. 48 km)
You’ll cycle along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Henrichenburg ship lift. In the afternoon, you’ll reach Dortmund, where a guided tour of the Phönix-West Skywalk awaits you.

Day 3: Dortmund – Hattingen (approx. 37 km)
You’ll ride along a disused railroad line to Witten. In Muttental, you’ll visit the Nachtigall Coal Mine. Afterward, you’ll cycle along the Ruhrtal Bike Path to Hattingen.

Day 4: Hattingen – Essen-Kettwig (approx. 41 km)
In the morning, you’ll visit the Henrichshütte Hattingen. Afterward, you’ll follow the Ruhrtal Bike Path to Lake Baldeney and Villa Hügel. Overnight stay in Kettwig.

Day 5: Essen-Kettwig – Duisburg (approx. 26 km)
After a short bike ride and a tour of the Aquarius Wassermuseum in Mülheim, you’ll quickly reach Duisburg, where you’ll have plenty of time for a harbor tour.

Day 6: Duisburg – Essen (approx. 46 km)
In the morning, you’ll take a bike ride through the Duisburg Nord Landscape Park. On the way to Essen, you’ll explore the Gasometer in Oberhausen and the Tetraeder in Bottrop.

Day 7: Essen – Herne (approx. 37 km)
The day begins with a guided tour of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. In the afternoon, you’ll reach the Hoheward slag heap. You’ll reward yourselves with the best panoramic view of the Ruhrgebiet and cycle down to Herne.

Day 8: Departure from Herne 

Conclusion: You’ll remember this beautiful trip through the Ruhrgebiet for a long time to come!
