It’s impossible to capture the character of the town of Ense in a single word. It lies above the RuhrtalRadweg and the Fürstenberg, with its castle ruins and the Fürstenberg Chapel. Right on the RuhrtalRadweg stands the historic and stately “Haus Füchten,” which is well worth a visit.

A variety of quaint villages dot the landscape between the fields along the Hellweg and Haarstrang and the hills of the Arnberg Forest. Above the RuhrtalRadweg, on the Fürstenberg in the municipality of Ense, lie the ruins of a medieval castle. From the Fürstenberg Chapel, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Ruhrtal and the city of Arnsberg. Ense is a paradise for food lovers, as numerous farm stands along the RuhrtalRadweg entice visitors with local specialties. The Niederense Local History Museum offers insights into the region’s past way of life and work. In addition, the museum features depictions of the former Cistercian convent of Himmelpforten through models, pictures, and exhibits from the convent. From the RuhrtalRadweg, you can easily follow the Panoramic Trail to the Möhnetalradweg, which will take you to the district of Bremen, the geographic and administrative center of Ense. There you’ll find inviting restaurants, the town hall, an e-bike charging station, and the 12th-century, two-bay Basilica of St. Lambertus.
