The RuhrtalRadweg meets the Route of Industrial Heritage
More than 30 highlights lie along the route between Dortmund and Duisburg, Bochum and Herdecke: viewpoints over panoramas of industrial landscapes, listed workers' housing estates, the Zollverein World Heritage Site and disused steelworks. A variety of museums, restaurants and Biergartens round off this spectacular tour.
Day 1: Arrival in Herdecke
The vacation starts in Herdecke: a round of mini golf and in the evening a stroll through the historic Bachviertel with its many half-timbered houses.
Day 2: Herdecke - Essen (65 km)
Harkordtsee, Baldeneysee and the towpath. In between, the historic Nachtigall colliery, the Henrichshütte industrial monument, Hattingen's Altstadt, the Bochum Railway Museum and the Krupp Villa Hügel.
Day 3: Essen - Duisburg (40 km)
From the mouth of the Ruhr to the Rhine. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Rhine shipping and a Ruhr region beer with a hearty currywurst in Duisburg harbor between old warehouse and mill buildings. Schimmi sends his regards!
Day 4: Duisburg - Oberhausen (28 km)
Explore the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park by bike and follow the "path of iron". In Oberhausen, the mighty Gasometer awaits your visit.
Day 5: Oberhausen - Bochum (41 km)
The grandiose, swinging spiral bridge Slinky Springs to Fame leads across the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Tetraeder landmark and then to the Zeche Zollverein World Heritage Site.
Day 6: Bochum - Castrop-Rauxel (50 km)
The cycle path meanders along the ore railroad route past Holger's ore railroad shack (cult!) to the historic Henrichenburg ship lift.
Day 7: Castrop-Rauxel - Herdecke (42 km)
A stop at the industrial monument Zeche Zollern is definitely worthwhile. Don't miss the Phoenixsee lake and a guided tour of the former ironworks' skywalk.
Day 8: Departure
Conclusion: Nowhere else in Germany will you find such a varied route as in the Ruhr metropolis.
