Ruhr-Eder GeoRadroute

The Ruhr-Eder GeoRadroute establishes a remarkable connection between the Sauerland and the Waldecker Land. The distinctive character of this route is revealed by its varied topography, which, on the one hand, winds through the picturesque valleys of the Ruhr and Eder rivers and, on the other hand, follows historic railroad rights-of-way for long stretches. Along the route, the Edersee—one of Germany’s most significant reservoirs—presents itself as an impressive natural phenomenon. Furthermore, the GeoRadroute passes through the GrenzWelten National Geopark, whose course offers profound insights into the geological evolution and morphological development of the landscape. The entire route, designed as a loop, offers a comprehensive exploration of the geological, historical, and cultural development along the eastern edge of the Rothaar Mountains. Along the route, visitors can enjoy regional specialties at select restaurants, which complement the cultural journey with culinary delights and foster a deeper understanding of the natural and cultural landscape.

An emergency shelter system has been set up throughout the region (Soest District, Hochsauerland District, Märkischer Kreis, Olpe District, and Siegen-Wittgenstein District). You can find emergency shelters on information boards at intersections and on hiking trail signs, among other places.

For a change of pace, you might enjoy a boat ride across the Edersee. This also allows you to shorten the tour if you wish.

There are 12 train stations along the route that you can use to arrive and depart by bike:

You can easily return to your starting point via the train stations in Winterberg, Olsberg, Brilon, Brilon-Wald, Willingen, Usseln, Korbach, Herzhausen, Schmittlotheim, Ederbringhausen, Viermünden, and Frankenberg (Eder)

To Winterberg:

From the north: A7 Hamburg–Hanover – A2 Bielefeld – A33 Paderborn – take the Wünnenberg exit, toward Brilon > Olsberg > Winterberg

From the south: A5 Frankfurt–Giessen – Marburg exit, toward Allendorf > Winterberg

From the west: A44 Dortmund–Kassel – take the Werl exit, follow signs for A46 Arnsberg > Meschede > Bestwig > Olsberg > Winterberg

From the east: A44 Kassel–Dortmund – Zierenberg exit, toward B251 Korbach > Medebach > Winterberg
