The monastery church of St. Mary, is the only Marian pilgrimage site in the diocese of Essen and welcomes 40,000 pilgrims a year who come to the Marian image of the "Sorrowful Mother of Stiepel", which was made in the mid-15th century. The monastery offers monthly pilgrimages, youth pilgrimages and a youth vigil. The monastery building is arranged in a U-shape around the pilgrimage site.
The monks of the monastery look after the pilgrimage site, the adjoining parish and are partly involved in university teaching. They also distil gin in the monastery using raw materials from the monastery's own garden or from Heiligenkreuz Abbey.
The monastery has an open-air altar, a pilgrims' hall and a monastery store.
