The former Schwerte-Ost Railroad Repair Shop is one of the defining landmarks of Schwerte’s industrial history. Following plans dating back to 1913, war-related delays, and its opening on October 1, 1922, the facility developed into a central maintenance center for heavy freight locomotives. The locomotive straightening hall, boiler forge, smithies, foundry, pipe, instrument, and pressure gauge workshops, as well as its own power plant, reflect the division of labor and the technical and operational culture of the steam locomotive era.

The neighboring Kreinberg settlement was developed as a garden-city-style residential complex for employees and their families. At the same time, the site preserves the memory of forced labor during the Nazi era; a memorial honors the victims. Following the decline of steam locomotive technology and the plant’s closure in 1987, parts of the site have been repurposed. Listed buildings such as the locomotive straightening hall, power plant, and administrative buildings illustrate the transformation of labor, technology, and urban development in the eastern Ruhrgebiet.
