The Qian Yuan Chinese Garden, nestled within the Botanical Garden of Ruhr University Bochum, covers an area of 1,000 square meters. The name “Qian Yuan” refers to the poet Tao Qian, who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries and became known for his story “The Peach Blossom Spring,” which describes a harmonious society. The garden is designed in the southern Chinese style, with materials such as natural stone, brick, and wood in subdued colors like white, black, gray, and dark red dominating the design. This design reflects the traditional aesthetics of gardens created by scholars and artists. A large pond occupies half of the garden, while an impressive rockery composed of 600 metric tons of stone completes the scene. The garden’s appearance changes with the seasons. Due to weather-related damage, the Bochum Chinese Garden Association (Förderverein Chinesischer Garten e.V.) was founded in 2000 to oversee its maintenance and offer regular guided tours.
