The Oberhausen Gasometer, which began operating as a gas storage facility in 1929, is a central landmark of the Ruhr Metropolis. Standing 117 meters tall, Europe’s largest disc-shaped gasometer serves as a testament to the Ruhrgebiet’s former heavy industry. Through a variety of exhibitions and art events, this industrial monument has established itself as a cultural venue of supraregional significance.
The renovation fixed the gas pressure dome at 4.20 meters, creating two exhibition spaces each measuring over 3,000 square meters. A 100-meter-high hall is used to showcase large-scale installations. The gas pressure dome features a raised stage and a spectator grandstand. A glass panoramic elevator offers a unique perspective. The roof is accessible via an exterior elevator or 592 steps and offers a sweeping view of the region.
Its use as a cultural venue began in 1994–1995 with “Fire and Flame—200 Years of History in the Ruhrgebiet.” Since then, the venue has regularly hosted acclaimed exhibitions focusing on topics such as monumental models of the Moon, Earth, or the Matterhorn. Christo also realized projects such as “The Wall” and “Big Air Package” in the gasometer.

The Gasometer Oberhausen is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During school breaks in North Rhine-Westfalen and on holidays, the Gasometer is also open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Opening hours may vary during special events.
