The Oberhausen Gasometer, commissioned in 1929 as a gas storage facility, is a central landmark of the Ruhr metropolis. At 117 meters high, Europe's largest disc gas holder illustrates the Ruhrgebiet's former heavy industry. The industrial monument has established itself as a cultural venue of supra-regional relevance through a variety of exhibitions and art events.

The conversion fixed the gas pressure disc at 4.20 meters, creating two exhibition areas of over 3,000 square meters. A 100-metre-high hall is used to present large-scale installations. The gas pressure disk includes a raised stage and a grandstand for spectators. A glass panoramic elevator offers a special perspective. The roof is accessible via an external elevator or 592 steps and offers a comprehensive view of the region.

Cultural use began in 1994/1995 with "Fire and Flame - 200 Years of History in the Ruhrgebiet". Since then, exhibitions have been held here on a regular basis, focusing on monumental models of the moon, earth and the Matterhorn. Christo also realized projects such as "The Wall" and "Big Air Package" in the Gasometer.
