Nuttlar Slate Building

The Schieferbau Nuttlar Mining Museum has been permanently closed since August 31, 2023. It stands as an outstanding example of mining architecture in the Upper Ruhrtal. The mine, an unaltered relic of a bygone era, is distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. This authentic setting made it possible to experience the original conditions of slate mining.

Inside the mine, far removed from modern infrastructure such as gravel paths, concrete steps, or electric lighting, an underground world unfolded. Previous guided tours led through a landscape of underground lakes, expansive chambers, and unique slate staircases winding through high tunnels. There, visitors gained in-depth insights into traditional mining methods and the artful crafting of slate. The process of splitting and shaping the material was vividly demonstrated using original tools. This historic site in the Hochsauerland district thus remains a significant testament to the region’s industrial history.
