Needle Museum at the Maste-Barendorf Historic Factory Complex

The Needle Museum at the Maste-Barendorf Historic Factory Complex documents the evolution of needle-making, from early handcrafted methods to industrial production. Bone needles from the Roman Empire, late-antique decorative needles, and early-medieval brass needles illustrate the long history of this craft. Tools from the 18th century demonstrate the labor-intensive manufacturing process, from wire to the finished product, which merchants from Iserlohn sold at trade fairs across Europe. In the 19th century, about half of Iserlohn’s urban population worked in needle production, including many women and children. Tools, machines, and needle products, as well as multimedia stations, convey the memories passed down by female needleworkers and factory owners. The exhibition explores technical ingenuity, child labor, social hardship, workers’ dignity, civic pride, and international trade relations. The museum is located in a historic half-timbered building. The rooms are situated on different levels separated by stairs or steps and are therefore not fully wheelchair accessible.
