The Museum of German Inland Navigation in Duisburg is one of the most interesting museums in the Ruhrgebiet. Here you can learn and experience everything to do with inland shipping. The museum is located in Duisburg's Ruhrort district in a former art nouveau indoor swimming pool, which is a listed building. You can also visit the Museum of German Inland Navigation by boat in true style.
In the permanent exhibition, you can marvel at various maritime exhibits relating to the technical, economic and social history of German inland shipping and immerse yourself in the history of shipping from the Stone Age to the present day with multimedia installations. Many detailed models and numerous hands-on exhibits are presented on three floors.
The exhibition focuses on life and work on board. You will learn interesting facts about the everyday life of skippers and their families on water and on land. Other areas include passenger shipping and the romance of the Rhine, cargo handling techniques in the port, the history of the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports, the German canal system and river and lock construction. Would you like a little more shipping? Then explore one of the world's largest inland ports on a round trip!
