The Himmelpforten monastery ruins, originally founded by Cistercian nuns in 1246, are a monument of regional importance. The complex was completely destroyed on May 17, 1943 by the tidal wave that followed the destruction of the Möhne dam. At this point, the convent had already been abandoned for 140 years. Today, there is a memorial at the nuns' former place of work that commemorates this historic event and illustrates its historical dimension.

Directions

The monastery ruins can be reached on foot, by bike or by car. A parking lot is available in the immediate vicinity.
