Several thousand square meters of exhibition space, a list of artists ranging from Anselm Kiefer to Gerhard Richter, a varied program and striking architecture in Duisburg's chic inner harbour - that is the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst.
Opened in 1999, the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst is now one of the leading art museums in the Ruhr metropolis. Between industrial culture and white cube, the museum is housed in a former granary. The Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron transformed the building, where grain was stored until the 1970s, into a varied center for art with high, light-filled rooms. The staircase is not just a highlight for architecture fans.

The museum has one of the most extensive collections of German post-war art. Visitors can expect a unique tour through several decades of outstanding art, from the 1950s to the present day. The extensive collection of the married couple Sylvia and Ulrich Ströher is exhibited here.
From Art Informel to Concrete Art, Minimal Art and Fluxus to Conceptual Art, the development of the German avant-gardes of the post-war period can be traced in the Küppersmühle like nowhere else in the Ruhrgebiet.
Painting is comprehensively represented in entire groups of works by artists such as Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, A. R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Imi Knoebel and Gerhard Richter, but photography (including Bernd and Hilla Becher, Candida Höfer, Hans-Christian Schink) and sculpture are also on display - above all sculptures by Norbert Kricke and Hans Uhlmann.
The key works in the collection are displayed on two floors in 15 spacious rooms with a total of around 2,500 square meters of exhibition space.
The MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst opened its extension in September 2021: The exhibition space will be more than doubled with an additional 2,500 square meters, the historic silos will have a viewing platform and will be accessible to visitors for the first time. The entire spectrum of the Ströher collection will be on display in the extension. The project is made possible by the MKM Foundation established by Sylvia and Ulrich Ströher.
