The Märkisches Museum Witten presents an impressive collection that focuses on Art Informel and Expressionism. The works of artists such as Karl Fred Dahmen, Karl Otto Götz and Emil Schumacher illustrate the diversity of informal art, which is characterized by abstraction and the renunciation of geometric forms. The focus is on the spontaneous creative process and the emphasis on material and color. The collection is complemented by important expressionist works by Max Pechstein, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Christian Rohlfs, who left their mark on the Westfalen art scene.

The museum also offers insights into the development of abstraction in modernism, with works by Josef Albers and the Düsseldorf group ZERO. Surreal tendencies of the post-war period and figurative Critical Realist painting of the 1960s and 70s are also represented. The temporary exhibitions focus on contemporary art and expand the spectrum to include photography, video and installation art. The museum has been part of the Kulturforum Witten since 2016 and offers space for relaxation and cultural events in the reading café.
