The Märkisches Museum in Witten presents an impressive collection focused on Informel and Expressionism. Works by artists such as Karl Fred Dahmen, Karl Otto Götz, and Emil Schumacher illustrate the diversity of Informel art, which is characterized by abstraction and the absence of geometric forms. The spontaneous creative process and the emphasis on material and color take center stage. The collection is complemented by significant Expressionist works by Max Pechstein, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Christian Rohlfs, who have shaped the Westphalian art scene.

The museum also offers insights into the development of abstraction in modern art, with works by Josef Albers and the Düsseldorf-based ZERO group. Surrealist tendencies of the postwar period and figurative painting of Critical Realism from the 1960s and 1970s are also represented. The temporary exhibitions focus on contemporary art and expand the museum’s scope to include photography, video art, and installation art. Since 2016, the museum has been part of the Kulturforum Witten and offers a space for relaxation and cultural events in its reading café.
