LWL-Museum Zeche Nachtigall - How it all began in the Ruhrgebiet

The Nachtigall Colliery in Witten is considered the cradle of Ruhr mining and is therefore a must-see for all of you who want to know exactly how it all began.

Living pioneer times in the Muttental valley

The pioneering days of mining come to life in the Muttental valley. Equipped with helmets, visitors can explore a real coal seam in the Nachtigallstollen. Former miners will tell you about the tough conditions under which the miners once brought the "black gold" to the surface - a special adventure for families with children. In the "Hercules" shaft, which was once used for mining, you can learn about mining technology and working conditions in the 19th century. In the colliery's historic engine house, you can experience an audiovisual journey through the Ruhrtal and relive the era of industrialization. The oldest winding machine in the Ruhrgebiet is also located here. The later use of the colliery, which closed in 1892, as a brickworks can be seen in the ring kiln. You can perfectly combine your trip to the Nachtigall colliery with a ride on the Ruhrtalbahn from Hagen or the Bochum Railway Museum as well as a short ride on the Muttentalbahn - a former mine railroad.
