The LWL Museum Zeche Nachtigall in Witten is an important testament to industrial culture in the Ruhrgebiet. As one of the region’s earliest coal mines, it offers a deep insight into the early days of mining. In the Muttental valley, the pioneering era of mining comes to life. Equipped with helmets, visitors can venture into the Nachtigall Tunnel to reach an actual coal seam. Former miners recount the harsh working conditions under which the “black gold” was extracted. The “Hercules” shaft provides Wissen about 19th-century mining technology and working conditions. In the historic machine house, an audiovisual presentation brings the industrialization of the Ruhrgebiet to life. The region’s oldest hoisting machine is also located here. The ring kiln illustrates the mine’s later use as a brickworks. A visit can be perfectly combined with a ride on the Ruhrtalbahn or the Muttental Railway, which round out the historical experience.

Directions by Car Take the A 43, exit at Witten-Heven, follow Herbede Straße to the B 235/B 226, turn right onto Ruhrstraße and follow the B 235; after the Ruhr Bridge, turn right onto Nachtigallstraße. Parking: There are a few parking spaces directly at the museum entrance. An alternative parking lot is located approximately 1.3 km away at the “Parkplatz Nachtigallstraße” near the Theresia Coal Mine and Light Railway Museum.
