The LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen, founded in 1947 as the Municipal Gallery, has developed into a major exhibition venue. The Aachen-based art patrons Peter and Irene Ludwig, known for the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, have shaped the gallery since the 1980s. Starting in 1983, the castle complex housed the Ludwig Institute for Art of the GDR, which presented works by East German artists in the West for the first time. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the construction of the Westfield Centro, the gallery was redesigned in 1998 and has been presenting a diverse program ever since. The LUDWIGGALERIE offers new perspectives on familiar themes and presents masterpieces from the Ludwig Collection, spanning from antiquity to the modern era. The Populäre Galerie is dedicated to comics, cartoons, and caricatures, featuring retrospectives on artists such as Ralf König and Walter Moers. In the field of photography, the gallery has been a recognized institution for years. The Landmarkengalerie provides an artistic perspective on the region’s structural transformation.
