Haus Villigst in Schwerte traces its origins to a complex of buildings constructed in 1819 that is now a designated historic landmark. Below the current main house once stood a knight’s castle, first mentioned in 1170, which was demolished after 1815. The complex thus preserves traces of a long history of use, ranging from its former role as a seat of power to its current educational activities.

Since 1948, the Evangelical Church of Westfalen has used Haus Villigst as a central educational and conference center. Each year, approximately 30,000 people participate in seminars, conferences, and workshops there. The conference center features 20 meeting rooms and 86 guest rooms. It also serves as the headquarters for several departments and institutes of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia (EKvW), including the Institute for Church and Society, the Office for Youth Work, the Pedagogical Institute, the Institute for Initial, Continuing, and Further Education, and the Evangelical Study Foundation. The inner courtyard, historic buildings, and the chapel provide the site with a distinct spatial framework.
