Grimme Museum in Assinghausen

Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme (1827–1887), a German writer, teacher, and regional poet, is known as the “inventor of the Sauerland” because of his work in cultural and folklore studies. In the 19th century, he established himself in Westfalen as the most widely read dialect poet of his time. His diverse body of work included compositions, scientific research, and Low German plays; he also wrote significant Standard German poetry, which, however, did not receive the recognition it deserved until after his death.

The Grimme Museum in Assinghausen, housed in the former elementary school building, preserves the memory of this influential Sauerland poet. The modern, multimedia exhibition features original manuscripts, letters, early prints, and commemorative publications. At interactive stations, visitors learn about Grimm’s life and work, can experience his poetry through sound and visuals, and explore the Low German language in a playful way. The museum, which is also available for events upon request, offers a deep insight into the region’s cultural heritage.
