The Grimme Museum Assinghausen pays tribute to Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme (1827-1887), known as the "inventor of the Sauerland". The collection exhibits original manuscripts and early prints by this versatile Westfalen poet and cultural patron.
Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme (1827-1887), a German writer, teacher and local poet, is known as the "inventor of the Sauerland" due to his cultural and folkloristic works. In the 19th century, he established himself as the first dialect poet with the largest circulation in Westfalen. His multifaceted oeuvre included compositions, scientific research and plays in Low German; he also wrote important High German poetry, which only received the recognition it deserved after his death.
The Grimme Museum Assinghausen, housed in the former elementary school building, cherishes the memory of this influential Sauerland poet. The modern, multimedia exhibition presents original manuscripts, letters, early prints and commemorative publications. Visitors can experience Grimme's life and work at interactive stations, hear and see his poetry and playfully test the Low German language. The museum, which is also available for events on request, offers a deep insight into the cultural heritage of the region.
