Viewpoint/Observation Tower | Places to Visit

The Danzturm, a 28-meter-high observation tower located at 384.5 meters above sea level in the Iserlohn City Forest, is a striking landmark. Originally built as a telegraph station, the structure offers a sweeping view of the region. A restaurant complements the offerings, and the tower is also available for events upon request.

The Danzturm, named after Iserlohn’s honorary citizen Professor Ernst Danz—whose dedication was focused on secondary education and the reforestation of the city forest—is a striking landmark. It was built in 1908–1909 as part of the complex that included the former optical telegraph station No. 43 on the Fröndenberg, 384.5 meters above sea level. Funding came from donations by Iserlohn’s business community and residents. The architects, the Fromme brothers, designed the 28-meter-high tower, which was built by the Otto Schmidt company. The ceremonial dedication took place on May 22, 1909.

From the Danzturm’s observation deck, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view of the Sauerland and the Hellweg; on a clear day, the view extends as far as Dortmund, Unna, and Hamm. A commemorative plaque on the tower honors Professor Danz as a founding member of the Sauerland Mountaineering Association. The structure survived both world wars unscathed.

During the winter months, the adjacent meadow offers opportunities for sledding and skiing—occasionally under floodlights—and serves as the venue for the annual city skiing championships. The tower is available for events upon request.
