Count Adolph von der Mark had the medieval hilltop castle built in 1227 on a rocky outcrop known as “blanker Steyn.” The complex was one of the four main castles of the Counts of der Mark and served to control the Ruhrtal. Among the preserved structures are the imposing gate tower and sections of the curtain wall. From the 30-meter-high gate tower, a sweeping view extends over the Ruhrtal, Kemnader See, and the surrounding towns. The Blankensteiner Freiheit, a historic settlement at the foot of the castle, is one of North Rhine-Westfalen’s protected historic town and village centers, alongside Hattingen’s Altstadt. Within the castle grounds, there is a restaurant with a Biergarten.
