Count Adolph von der Mark built the medieval hilltop castle in 1227 on the steeply rising "blanken Steyn". The impressive remains include the mighty gate tower and the curtain wall. The 30-metre-high gate tower offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Ruhrtal. The Blankenstein "Freiheit" in the shadow of the castle is Hattingen's second historic town center alongside the Altstadt and is one of the specially protected historic town and village centers in North Rhine-Westphalia.
There is a restaurant with a Biergarten in the castle.
