Count Adolph von der Mark had the medieval hilltop castle built in 1227 on the rocky spur known as "blanker Steyn". The complex was one of the four main castles of the Counts of the Mark and served to control the Ruhrtal. The preserved parts include the mighty gate tower and segments of the curtain wall. The 30-metre-high gate tower offers a sweeping view over the Ruhrtal, Kemnader See and surrounding villages. Blankensteiner Freiheit, a historic settlement at the foot of the castle, is one of the protected historic town and village centers in North Rhine-Westphalia, alongside Hattingen's Altstadt. There is a restaurant with a Biergarten within the castle grounds.
