The Basilica of St. Ludgerus in Essen-Werden is one of the most important late Romanesque church buildings in the Rhineland. Originally built in the 9th century as the monastery church of Werden Abbey, it was redesigned in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. A particular highlight is the crypt, which houses the shrine of St. Liudger, the first bishop of Münster and founder of the abbey. The treasury of St. Ludgerus preserves valuable relics from the former Benedictine abbey of Werden, which was founded around 800. Particularly noteworthy are the early medieval treasures, complemented by works of gold and silversmithing, ivory carvings, sculptures, paintings, manuscripts and paraments. This collection offers a fascinating insight into the art and culture of past eras and makes the basilica a worthwhile destination for those interested in history and art.
