The Anreppen Roman camp, an important early Roman monument since its discovery in 1968, is picturesquely situated on the south bank of the River Lippe. In ancient times, it served as a strategic base in Rome's military conflict with the Germanic tribes, which historians report on in detail. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remarkable structures, such as the impressive commander's building and a unique military bath. Both show the strategic importance and lifestyle of the Roman soldiers. The camp also served as a logistical center that supplied the troops far to the east. Numerous everyday objects found here are now on display in the LWL Roman Museum. The Roman Park, which was opened in 2008, reconstructs trenches and roads to give visitors an insight into the historical significance of this site. An archaeological nature trail is in preparation to delve deeper into Roman history. Guided tours of the site offer the opportunity to experience the traces of the Roman presence in Westphalia at first hand.
