Holzwickede is located on the edge of the eastern Ruhrgebiet between the cities of Dortmund and Unna. This is where the Emscher river rises, today emblematic of the structural change in the Ruhrgebiet.

At the beautifully restored Emscherquellhof, you can marvel at the development of the "Emscher Reconstruction" generation project. But the Emscher community has even more to offer. Despite its proximity to the Ruhrgebiet conurbation, Holzwickede has still retained its idyllic charm. Worth seeing, for example, is the so-called Hilgenbaum, which adorns the coat of arms of the community to this day. In the past, justice was administered under the Hilgenbaum; it also served as a directional sign for the carters of the time and as a "bulletin board". After a long bike ride, cyclists can rest their legs in the 30,000-square-meter park of the moated castle Haus Operdicke or take refreshments in the café there. Visitors will find a variety of restaurants in the center of the community, not far from the historic town hall on the market square.
