On an excursion into the picturesque Ruhrtal, you will get to the bottom of the history of the Ruhrgebiet. Tip: If you like cycling, you can choose the LWL Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen as the destination for a leisurely bike tour with friends. This is because the attraction is located directly on the modern Ruhrtal cycle path. During your visit to the LWL Museum Henrichshütte, you will not only learn all about iron production in the past, you can also delve into various exciting temporary exhibitions.

The oldest blast furnace in thedistrict

If you follow the 'path of iron', you'll be high up at the Henrichshütte in Hattingen: from HO 3, the oldest blast furnace in the region, you'll have a great view of the surrounding area. From a height of around 55 meters, you can let your gaze wander over the Ruhrtal and take a look at the site of the ironworks from above. If you don't feel like climbing the stairs, the ride to the top in the glass elevator is a very special experience. In earlier times, around 10,000 workers were employed on the site of the industrial plant. Their work included the production of iron, steel and coke as well as the processing of metal. The city's last blast furnace closed in 1987. It is the showpiece of the site.

The show foundry brings the past back to life

In the show foundry, you can still see how the molten metal is processed today. If you like, you can follow the interesting reports of former employees as contemporary witnesses. A visit to the LWL-Museum Henrichshütte will give you a detailed impression of everyday working life on the site. You can also take part in guided tours: Families choose the offer on Fridays at 6 pm or Saturdays at 3 pm, adults opt for the daily tours - except Mondays - at half past 12.
