Ruhr Area Adventure

"4 days between castles, mining, steel and iron" - 4 days / 3 nights - length of the tour: 158 km

Along the Ruhr river, often idyllic, rural and close to nature, you go on a discovery tour by bike throughout the Ruhr Area. What makes this tour so extraordinary are the visible traces of coal and steel and the impressive industrial monuments in contrast to the many idyllic and rural sections and nature reserves.

1.Day: Schwerte – Witten (30 km)
Individual arrival in Schwerte. Spend your arrival day in the beautiful historic city centre of Schwerte and discover sights such as the old town hall with the Ruhr Valley Museum. From Schwerte you reach Witten along the Lake Hengstey and Lake Harkort.

2.Day: Witten – Essen (48 km)
The next day starts with a true highlight: At the Nachtigall colliery, you can witness the origins of Ruhr mining and even experience a real coal seam. Not only the historical city centre of Hattingen is a sight worth seeing, the former Henrichshütte is also a wonderful destination.

3.Day: Essen – Duisburg  (40 km)
Today is full of exciting sights. Villa Hügel by industrial pioneer Alfred Krupp and Lake Baldeney, where you can still find many traces of the very beginnings of Ruhr mining. In Werden, the abbey St. Ludgerus and the beautiful historic centre of the over 1200 years old village are truly impressive. Between Kettwig and Duisburg, the Ruhr Valley cycle path takes you through an extensive natural landscape, because actually only a small part of the Ruhr bank has buildings built on it. A historical water tower with a water museum and the castles Broich and Styrum round off the day.

4.Day: Duisburg - Hafen and Hüttenwerk (30 km)
Where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine, there is much to see: Europe's largest inland port interconnects the region with the seaports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, while the newly designed inner port impresses with its newly used storage and mill buildings. The disused Meiderich ironworks is a symbol of structural change and the highlight of the Industrial Heritage Route.
