Holzwickede lies on the edge of the eastern Ruhr Area between the cities of Dortmund and Unna. This is where the Emscher River originates, today symbolic of the structural change in the Ruhr Area.
On the beautifully restored Emscherquellhof, you can marvel at the development of the generation project "Emscherumbau" [Emscher Conversion]. But the Emscher community has even more to offer. Despite its proximity to the Ruhr conurbation, Holzwickede still retains its idyllic charm. Worth seeing, for example, is the so-called Hilgenbaum, which still adorns the coat of arms of the municipality to this day In former times, legal decisions were announced under the Hilgenbaum; and it also served as a signpost for the coachmen as well as a "black board". After a long cycle tour, cyclists can take a refreshing break in the 30,000 square metre park of the Wasserburg Haus Operdicke or enjoy a refreshing drink in the café. Visitors will find a varied culinary offering in the centre of the village, not far from the historic town hall on the market square.
